Cell Phone Use

Posted by: debrahereandnow on: October 17, 2009

I own a cell phone, and feel I display manners when and where I use it.  My biggest complaint about cell phone use has to do with people who are talking to me in person and answer their cell phone when it rings. Don’t get me wrong, if it is a family member I understand, I would not want anyone to miss an emergency from a family member. However once they have confirmed it is not an emergency, I would like to suggest that they  hang the damn phone up. I am visiting with you. You can talk to your family member when you get home.  And this is the main thing that irks me. I have one friend in particular no matter what , always answers the cell phone when we are visiting, even if they see on the screen it is not a family member, but it  is another friend call. Well DAMN again, we made arrangements to get together and then they have the nerve to answer their cell to talk to another friend while I sit there and twiddle my thumbs.

Well news  flash I will no longer sit by and deal with such rudeness. If you want to get together with me, then damn it talk to me and forget your damn cell. Here’s an idea , do what I do, look at who is calling if it is not a family member with a possible emergency , then push the silencer and continue your visit with me. Is that so hard to do?

There have been many times I have thought of asking this particular friend to vacation with me, but thank God I have held back. I’ll be damn if I am going to spend my time listening to your frigging phone ringing and watch as you answer it and talk. Your loss.

And if I have offended you , well tough ! The numerous times I have been offended with this type of behavior as reached ridiculous proportions.

Tell me now , am I wrong? I think not. However we are all entitled to our own opinions so please share yours with me.

Don’t even get me started on people who text and talk with their cell phones while driving.

What’s your opinion?

Food Inc.

Posted by: debrahereandnow on: August 31, 2009

Last Monday I went to see Food Inc. For those of you who may not know I am transitioning to becoming a raw foodist. What does that mean? It is when one eats fruits, vegetables, nuts and seed . It also means nothing is prepared in heat over 118 degrees. I am doing this for health reasons and other personal reasons. I have another blog totally devoted to this journey. I am always educating myself on the subject of raw foods. I do this by reading many books, other blogs and web sites. I also do this by attending seminars and watching documentaries on the subject of our food supply. My passion and concern of our food supply here in the good old USA  grows everyday. I have decided to place my review of the film FOOD INC., on this blog also. That is how important it is for me to do my small part in getting the word out. And in by doing so hopefully I can help one person to learn what I continue to learn is we must become more aware of our food supply  and the how’s why’s and what is being done to it.

This is a must see film for everyone. Once you see this film, you may reconsider eating meat or for that fact anything that is not either organically grown or any meat where the animal is not grass fed. Food Inc. takes us inside butcher houses and chicken houses and the inhumane way these animals along with pigs are treated and fed and raised for our consumption. It is a miracle any of us are still alive.

Food Inc. covers many important issues, such as purchasing organic foods from your local farmers. Genetic engineering of our foods, pesticide and cloning of our foods and the most appalling to me is the factory farming of animals. The industrial farms are here now and they are something that should be against the law. Instead there are 4 main companies who are in a sense backed by our government and this industrial way of farming leave the farmer not in control of their own farming.

These industrial farms create poor work conditions, pollute our environment and are completely unsafe to our food chain and are one of the causes of global warming. Food Inc. is very revealing and what you will view in this film will not only shock, but also turn your stomach and hopefully by the end you will want to become involved in the solution.

One of the bothersome points and there are many in this documentary , is how this is affecting the health of the American public. Far to many of us seem to be accepting of this. And by doing so we are making the pharmaceutical companies richer and the main controllers of our farming industry continue to benefit .

As consumers we must demand to know how our foods are being produced and from that take it a step further and demand that more regulations for food producers be put through congress and they must be enforced. This is the only way to protect us and the future health of our nation if you are purchasing non-organic foods.

When you shop demand your grocery store offer organic foods. Do not eat meat unless it is grass fed and raised in humane ways. Do not purchase or eat any beef, poultry, pork or any other meat unless they too are grass fed and all animals for consumption should be free ranged.

There is so much more Food Inc covers, but I want each and everyone of you to go and see.

Get involved today.

You may not want to make the same choice I have about going raw, but please do make a choice about demanding better standards of our food supply. It is the way for us to regain control of our health. Remember shop organic, shop from your local farmers market and when shopping non organic always ask if the meat, poultry or pork comes from grass fed animals. Attempt to not eat any pesticide food products. Buying from local farmers does at least cut down on pesticides that blow over from a industrial farm that is using pesticides.

Please see the film and I leave you with something that may increase your curiosity enough you will go see Food Inc. After seeing this film I will never purchase anything that Monsanto has been a part of. Want to know why?

PLEASE GO SEE FOOD INC.

Blessings and let’s not forget………………..

Films Seen So Far in 2009 & My Thoughts on Them

Posted by: debrahereandnow on: August 25, 2009

This has been a great year for me to have the extra time to view these films. These are not listed in a specific order other then the order that I saw them.Instead of reviewing each one, since I would never have that much free time. However I have placed a number next to the title ranging in 0-10. 0 being the worst and 10 the best. I also have placed at least one sentence regarding each film.

1    Bridal Wars (Being in the wedding business for over 25 years, I have yet to see any bride behave this way, very unrealistic.)

1  Marley and Me (I feel you have to be a dog lover to appreciate this film, I am not , so I did not.)

4   Paul Blart Mall Cop ( Kevin James, is surprising agile for a man his size. Some humorous parts, but mostly silly stuff.)

10  Last Chance Harvey (Dustin Hoffman stars in this sweet “senior love story”

8   Frost & Nixon (For those of us who were asleep when Watergate was happenign, this is a decent refresher course.)

10  Slumdog Millionaire ( An inspirational  film.)

3    New In Town (Bless her heart, Renee   Zellweger keeps trying, when she really needs to join Heigle and Anniston in a different career. The saving grace in this film is looking at Harry Connick Jr. LOL)

10  Milk (Penn never disappoints. Great true story.)

2    He’s Just Not Into You  (And I’m just not into this overacted boring film.)

10  Wrestler ( Mickey Rourke what more can I say, the man can act.)

7     Knowing (the last half hour ruined this films rating)

8   The Soloist ( Great story, even though they really took some liberties in the screenplay, but that’s Hollywood.)

5    17 Again (I thought this film would get a 2 but actually it was better than I expected)

-2   Ghost of Girlfriends Past (Glad this film has passed on out of the theaters, to make room for better films.)

10    Stark Trek (First Star Trek anything I ever have seen  and much to my surprise I really enjoyed it)

7      Is Anyone There? ( Slow moving film , however I felt the heart of the story.)

5     Monsters versus Aliens (Not Dream Works best.)

8     Angels & Demons ( Critics panned it, I found it interesting and worth my $5.00.)

3     Night at the Museum 2 (The first one was far better) But loved Amy Adams as Amelia Earhart.Always a darling.)

10   Easy Virtue ( Everything in this films delivered. Great story, acting & scenery and I loved the ending!)

9    Sunshine Cleaning  (Amy Adams delivers as usual in this quirky film.)

7     The Brothers Bloom ( Fun and sometimes confusing storyline, but always entertaining

8    UP   (Cute and clever)

10   Valentino (Documentary on Valentino the designer. Lovely   & well documented film with Valentino actually in it.)

1      My Life in Ruins (The reason it is even getting a one is because of the Greek Landscape & Coastal Shots.)

10   Hangover (Unexpectedly the funniest film I have seen this year.)

8     Pelham 123 (Far better than the original but still lacking.)

1    Management ( Another bad film by Jennifer Anniston, she needs to find another career.)

5   The Proposal (I give it this  scoring again because of the wonderfully photographed scenery set in Alaska)

9   Whatever Works (Larry David  at his best,in one of  Woody Allen’s best.)

8   Public Enemy (Lacking in many areas, storyline, editing and sound.)

10  Away We Go (You can’t  help but  feel  good after this clever and unique film.)

4   Cheri (Expecting so much in the end no delivery.)

10    Departures (One of the best foreign films in a long time, every aspect of  this  film was beautiful, the story, the philosophy and the acting. Though I think most folks I know would find it depressing.)

6     Mrs. Goldberg (Documentary, about the sitcom of the same name back in the beginnings of television.)

-1   The Ugly Truth (The Ugly Truth is this film  stinks ! Another actress who should find another career.( Katherine Heigl) What a big disappointment, the raunchiness in this film  was not necessary and I am usually very liberal in that area. I do think Nora Ephron should retire, She has lost her touch.)

9    Julie/Julia (Simple, fun film. Meryl Streep will most likely get nominated for her part as Julia Child.)

8    Cold Souls (Interesting and unique story) Flawed in parts and it ran to long. But worth seeing.)

10   Food Inc. Documentary, well written and super editing. A must see for anyone who cares about the food they are eating.

There you have it. After reviewing my list I see I have invested in far too many not so good films. But I feel you have to have variety in your viewing. I will continue to see bad films and good films and on occasion perfect films.

I hope this list was helpful and perhaps you can share with me your thoughts and which films have stood out for you this year.

My hits are far over  2 thousand, makes me think you are shy and hesitate to comment. I enjoy hearing from all of you. Just wish it was more often, so please leave me your feedback. I would enjoying hearing your picks of the best and worst so far this year.

Thanks for reading.

Feeling Tribal

Posted by: debrahereandnow on: August 15, 2009

In 2007 I saw a film called The Visitor, it  is Directed by Thomas McCarthy and stars  Richard Jenkins, Haaz Sleiman, Danai Jekesai Gurira. It is a  wonderful, with out spoiling this film for you if you have not seen it , rent it today. After viewing it you will be filled with hope and an aspiration to become a part of something larger than yourself.  Drumming is a sub story within this film.  I was so moved by this film I suggested to a friend that they need to see. After she viewed the film she also reacted the same way . But she took it a step further and started participating in drum circles herself. This evening I attended one with her. It was interesting to me to experience the dynamics of the circle.  And as more drummers joined in the group the more the tribal feel set in. Each set became more intense than the next and you begin to get so lost in the rhythm that you no longer are aware of anyone else . It is you in sync with the beat. The rhythm is in your soul. WOW what a totally cool   night,  I will be going back.

Another  unique  feeling about these drum circles, is everyone is getting something out of it on their own personal level but at the same time you glance across at your fellow drummer and you know they are feeling what you are feeling and that my friends is one terrific connection.

It is wonderful to be a part of something that is so uplifting!

I’m Back………………………….

Posted by: debrahereandnow on: August 10, 2009

Hope everyone is doing well. I thought it time to kick back and post a new blog. Just got in from casino hopping all weekend.  NO I did not win but in the end all I lost was$10.00. Not bad not bad at all. Plus I had some fun and hey you can’t complain about that.

What have I been doing your ask? Not sure if I mentioned but I am enrolled in two new classes.  One is Poetry which I am pretty sure I am going to drop. The teacher is really not involved in the class, he has the students critique each others work. I think teaching like that sucks big time. I as a student am not getting paid to do his job. Besides that he is the one with the experience not all of students. How does anyone get away with a course structured like that? You think I am going to leave my education in the hands of students who are in the same boat as me and want to learn? Crazy I tell you.

The other course is Writing Basics 101: Spelling, Grammar, Punctuation, and Writing Structures.  I had been carrying an A in the class, then one test I took I got every question work . I have never gotten all questions wrong on a test, so quite obviously I did not understand the test and what the teacher was looking for . Currently my grade is now a low B. I will have to make sure I understand everything.  I do not want the B to stay that way. I will bring it back up to an A. Anyway this Writing course does have  a lot of tests and assignments , so that has been keeping me busy.

I am also now attempting to live a life of eating raw foods. It has been challenging. But I am doing fine sticking to it. If your interested in reading that blog too, let me know and I will email you the address. I don’t want to post it here, because I do want to keep the separation of them and  hey there is such a thing as over exposure.

I am still searching for an “in person” book club. I can not believe they are so hard to find. I am going to check one of them out at Barnes and Noble on the 15th. I am hoping it will be a good one with a lot of interaction. And hopefully a great selection of books to read.

Until next time……………………………

RIP MICHAEL JACKSON

Posted by: debrahereandnow on: July 15, 2009

My last words on this subject.

If any one wants to know where Michael Jackson’s fan base comes from it is New York and VA. Most of the posts I received came from those areas. So thank you all for stopping by my blog. There are several folks who wrote and said I deleted their posts. To that I respond as I have before my blog is set to not allow any incoming vulgar posts. If one can not respond in a calm and some what intelligent way, then you will not see your post on my blog. Also there were times when I never even saw posts that a few folks were talking about. But if you did send again they are posted under the original subject.

Also some folks did post a reply to the 3 Fallen Stars under a post that had nothing to do with the 3 Fallen Stars. I did not post those either because those posts would not have made any sense when they had to do with Michael.

I am done with the subject of Michael Jackson. This post will not accept any more responses.

Again thank you for stopping by my blog. Time to move on………………………………

But first let me leave all of you with this thought, is it not a sad state that in our nation we give more attention to a fallen star when we have our  mothers, fathers, sons, daughters, uncles, aunts, cousins, nieces and nephews dying for our nation and they do not get as much praise, adoration and rarely a thank you from our nation for keeping our freedom, so that we can all go on with our nice life.  It all seems very unbalanced to me.

3 Fallen Stars

Posted by: debrahereandnow on: June 26, 2009

I think it is interesting that most often celebrities/stars die in sets  of 3. We have certainly seen that occur this week.

Look who has passed this week. Ed McMahon, Farrah Fawcett & Michael Jackson on the same day that Farrah passed. How rude is he taking news time from Farrah?

Go ahead and call me a cold hearted bitch, but I think the news time that is being devoted to Jackson is absurd. He is not royalty, he did not discover a cure for any disease, he is not a man who has done anything great. If everyone would take a few moments and reflect on his life they would remember he is a child molester he is the epitome of a pedophile. Yes I know he was acquitted but than again O.J. got away with murder. It is a sad commentary on how are judicial system works or I should say fails. We all know what the truth is in both of these cases. Still he is being remembered by most as the King of Pop. Sure he is a part of our music history, but so are thousands of other terrific and even better musicians than Michael . I do actually own a couple of 45 rpm records of the Jackson 5. I even like Thriller other than that I was not a true fan.

Though the  loss for his family and friends is justified and  very painful. I personally feel no loss for his life. And I personally think fans and the news media should get a grip on such over exposure. I will not be surprised if they cover his funeral and oh my God I can just imagine all of the specials that will be done on him. Oh there will be The Biography Channel doing a bio on him. and of course VH1 will do their tribute as will  MTV. Then we have all those horrible shows like Extra who will over and over again try to bait you in with all their comical tags so you will watch and stay tune for the next redundant segment. We will than have to be exposed to who will be the caretakers of the children, who will get what is left of his estate. It will be a circus for sometime no doubt.

I do pray that his children to get to live a normal life and be happy. Hopefully whoever becomes the caretaker for them will allow them to live with out a mask. The struggle the children will have will be two fold first because of the loss of the man they considered their  father and secondly  having to adjust to living a half way normal life. You just know the paparazzi will be following them forever.

Really people let’s start being more realistic on what these musicians, actors, comics and any other talented folks have on our life. They are here for us to enjoy their talent, nothing more. We are not to worship them, we are only to appreciate, and be happy they decided to share their talent with the world. Their talents became their jobs by choice and desire. The public’s support created their success.

If you want to worship something or someone , than worship your creator.

I know a few of you will leave me comments that oppose what I am saying and that is OK. That is what is great about our country. I am entitled to my opinion and I have the gift of freedom to say what I choose. So I shall continue to not shed tears on any celebrity or star who passes. All I will feel is a blessing that if I liked them I was able to enjoy their talent and nothing more. No sadness, no tribute, nothing. Life goes on….wake up world and live your life instead of carrying on like it was Jesus Christ who had died.

Hooray for Hollywood

Posted by: debrahereandnow on: June 3, 2009

I have always been a fan of Hollywood and the films they produce. I am a sap when it comes to falling for the formula romantic comedies.

As of   late I have really been viewing art films. My area does not bring them to the local theaters much, so I have been venturing over to Newport Lido in Newport Beach and Westpark 8 in Irvine. At first my excessive film viewing made me think perhaps I was in a depressed state and this was a ritual of escapism for me. I was wrong. I really have nothing to be depressed about. To me a good health day is always good reason to rejoice.

I decided to delve deeper into my psych and realized I have been seeing so many films because I admire and respect the brilliance of the screenwriters. Of course let’s step before them and give credit to the first brilliant brain and that would be the creator of the story, the author.

I have wanted to be a writer for some time and never considered being a screenwriter. However as I say this I have noticed how I reflect on the films that I view and I am always coming up with what I feel would have improved upon it. Of course then there are those films that are just wonderful pieces of art that I would never change one line, scene or ending.

I am just loving going to the theater. Sometimes I go alone, sometimes with a family member sometimes with a friend. But always knowing I am getting something more or different out of it than the person who came with me. It is kind of like how I view photographs, I use to shoot professionally to this day I cannot just look at a photo and say how nice. I look at it and review the lighting, composition and the angle of the object or person and several other items that most folks do not even care about. I know when viewing other folk’s photography I am always expecting better and expecting more then what they deliver.

Films are sort of becoming that way to me now. I have begun to no longer accept such mainstream films. (Though I do enjoy them and am looking forward to seeing some of the June mainstream releases.) I find now I want more from the films I view. I want a strong storyline; I want interesting and different characters being sharp and witty.  I want the movie to show me characters with true emotions, character with strength. I want majestic scenery and  avant-garde developed scripts. I want my times worth.  I do not think anyone who is wanting this from their film viewing is asking too much do you?

There have been several films that have delivered this month for me.  I would recommend any of these if you too are starving for inventiveness or originality. These are basically low budget films that are a must see, you have to look for them the metro-plex type theaters do not think it is worth their space to show them, when they can show big budget films that make them far more money.

Valentino The Last Emperor This is an ingenious documentary on Valentino Garavani the Italian fashion designer. You get to see the insights of his brilliance, his lover, his life and homes. It is just a small portion of what the man is, never the less a very outstanding documentary.

Is Anybody There? This British eerie film yet lovely film about a young boys obsessed with death, he lives with his parents who have turned their home in to a hospice for the elderly. Stars Michael Caine who attempts to teach the young boy that life is about living.

Easy Virtue I am not talking about the silent film version done by Alfred Hitchcock based on Noël Coward’s. I am speaking of the 2009 Independent film release of the same name. A genre I would call a social comedy. It is classically funny. Filmed in Great Britain it stars American actress Jennifer Biel. This film is clever, full of witty and quirky characters. The scenery is spectacular and there is not one dull moment. The ending is something you hope happens as the movie progresses and what a wonderful semi-surprise when it does.

My film viewing seems to have become and addiction an addiction where I cannot wait to devour the next film. I can’t wait to view it so I can digest it, let it settle in my mind and then again admire the brilliance of the entire creation process and those who gave me the gift of viewing it.

I doubt I will ever become a screenwriter (it is not my hearts desire) I doubt I will become a film critic. What I don’t doubt is I will continue to view these films and just maybe it will plant the seed to create a story of my own. Perhaps it will not be seen on the big screen but maybe just maybe it may possibly be viewed in print somewhere someday.

Until then I am thankful for those who do create stories that allow us to visit places emotionally and visually and at the same time their work stimulates our minds.
